In love under the moonlight

(This is a scene from a random story I've been creating in my head. I've been reading lots of romance books lately, and I wanted to give it a try. Let me know what you think!)

"What are you doing up so late?", I asked, emerging from behind Elliot, who was facing the moonlight that danced in the waters of the lake. His blue eyes lighted up when he saw me.

"I couldn't sleep. You?", he asked as I sat next to him, crossing my legs. My upper lip curled in a sneer of disgust.

"Amber's snores were too much to bear," I snorted. Elliot's laugh echoed in the quiet night. "I mean, how can a girl even be so noisy? I'd rather sleep outside on a rock."

"I'd very much like to witness that," he grinned, his eyes then landed on my cold shoulders. "Though I think you'd better go back inside. It freezing out here," he pointed out.

"I was, in fact, thinking to go for a swim," a satisfied smile spread across my face when I saw the shock in his eyes. I didn't waste any more time and ran towards the lake. A chill ran all over me when my feet touched the icy water.

"What are you doing? Come back here!", he chided. I continued to ignore him as I swam deeper into the lake.

"Why don't you come and get me, then?" I teased. "You're a terrible body-guard. What kind of body-guard doesn't swim? What if I drown?" I asked, feigning worry.

"You know I don't like water!" he shouted, crossing his arms. I chuckled, and suddenly an idea struck me. I let out a scream and purposely let myself sink in the water, moving my arms around me frantically.

"A cramp! Help me!" I managed through my non-stopping struggle. I fought to keep myself from smiling when I heard a splash in the water. Then, a pair of arms firmly sized me by my arms, pulling me up the icy water.

"I told you it was dangerous!" He nearly shouted. His worried eyes turned into a scowl when he saw the playful smile in my lips. I giggled and flicked water playfully in his face. His scowl was replaced by an amused grin as he sent a small wave of water in my direction.

I swam away from him, unable to keep my laughter from erupting. He kept trying to chase after me in order to catch me, but, of course, I wasn't going to make it easy for him.

As I was fleeing from him, a sudden pain shot through my left leg - a cramp, to be sure -, provoking me to halt and his catching me, his arms surrounding my waist.

Our eyes locked, causing the entire world to stop moving around us.

He started at me quietly, taking in my features. He observed me as if I was the most precious thing he had ever gazed upon, his eyes filled with pure adoration. I could feel my heart hammering against my chest and millions of butterflies broke free inside my stomach.

However, the spell was broken as doubt crept into his eyes, and his brow frowned ever so slightly. He released me from his grip, and I couldn't help but to feel an overwhelming wave of disappointment wash over me.
